Her encounter with YouTube
Last week, I had a chat with one of my colleagues. She is a mother for her 3 years old daughter, and from her, I heard a very impressive story that made me feel “Digital native age is really really next to me.”
Her story was like this; she was at home with her daughter on a weekday. Because it was a weekday, so during the working hours, the mother had to concentrate on her work, and she couldn’t have a time to play with her even her daughter asked her to play with. So the mother had to think about the way she can keep her daughter silent in a good mood until she finishes working on the day. It lasted just an hour till the end of work on the day, so the mother decided to make her daughter watch some videos on YouTube.
Mother set it up for her daughter
Mother turned the TV monitor on, then changed the input channel to the HDMI, then turned her iPad on, then booted the YouTube App. From several videos suit for children to watch, the mother selected a video, then made her daughter take a seat in front of the TV monitor, then let her daughter watch the video. Since YouTube recommends next video after the first video ends, so left the rest to YouTube, and the mother finished her work on the day peacefully thanks to YouTube.
Watch YouTube by herself
The very next day, the daughter asked her mother for YouTube again. So the mother set it up for her daughter again, and the daughter enjoyed watching YouTube again. One day, as usual, the daughter asked to have YouTube hour again, so as usual, the mother started setting up, but the daughter stopped her mother setting it up, and she tried to do it by her self. Turned the TV monitor on, then selected HDMI as the input channel, and then asked password to logon to her mother’s iPad, then touched YouTube app by herself… It’s amazing!! The mother never taught her daughter how to set YouTube up, but silently and unconsciously her daughter learned how to start watching YouTube on the TV monitor.
Why I cannot skip the commercial messages on TV?
On the other day, the daughter asked a question to her mother while watching her favorite anime TV program. “Why I cannot skip the commercial messages today? Until yesterday I could make it, though.”
The question was very impressive to me. The daughter couldn’t find the differences between the videos on YouTube and the on-air TV program. She believed that all the commercial messages can be skipped by several taps or clicks. For the 3 years old girl, the mechanism or “how it works” have no sense, she is very native to the digital stuff. As my conclusion, I felt I should keep myself always updated to have a nice time with youth age!!
